Exercise has always been challenging for me. My knees ache, and my balance isn’t the best, which means even something as simple as dancing around the house can be tough.
This week, I decided enough was enough. I realized that any movement is better than no movement at all, so I enlisted the help of a friend to keep me motivated. We’ve committed to 30-minute workout sessions each day, together but in our own homes. Even though she’s far more capable than I am, we motivate each other, working out together, but doing our own things. It’s been working out pretty well so far!
I’ve found a routine that works for me so far. I do everything seated.
- I kick things off by warming up with a song from Richard Simmons’ “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” on YouTube.
- Next, I focus on strengthening my arms with weights using a fantastic video from “Becoming Jai,” also on YouTube. I manage 10 minutes now but aim to increase to 15 soon.
- A fun break follows as I chair-dance to 2Cellos’ rendition of “Smooth Criminal.”
- Then, I tackle one or two chair routines with Justin Agustin to keep things varied.
- Finally, I wrap up with more chair-dancing, moving energetically to 2Cellos’ “Wake Me Up.”
Interestingly, I find myself looking for ways to increase my movement all through the rest of the day.
- While waiting for food to heat, I find myself walking around the house or balancing on one foot against the kitchen counter.
- I’ve made it a point to go out to get the mail every day.
- I even make extra trips around the house to put things in their proper place.
Though it might just be my imagination, I suspect my knees feel slightly better. Regardless, I know these movements aren’t doing me any harm, and they’re certainly helping my circulation, if nothing else.
Exercising with a friend has not only made it enjoyable, but also helps us both establish a daily habit. I sometimes dream of being that person who dislikes missing a workout. I’ve heard people say that they hate missing a workout. I want to be one of those people!
Do you exercise in ways that keep you motivated?
