I make my bed (almost) every morning because I love going to sleep in a made bed. It sets the tone for the day: I am a person who gets things done. I must be. I made my bed.
There’s just one catch—I hate having my feet cramped under tightly tucked sheets, so I untuck the bottom of the bed before I get in. That means making my bed every day wasn’t just pulling up the covers. I had to completely remake it.
But I like to make life easier for myself, so I use a quilt with a cover—no top sheet or blankets. And I don’t “technically” make my bed every single day. I just straighten out the comforter, so it looks neat with the bottom untucked.
It took me a while to accept this as my way of making the bed. But yes, it counts for me because I created my own definition for this task. My opinion is the only one that matters here. If my way of making the bed works for me, then it’s okay.
I apply this philosophy to other areas of my life. I don’t always eat breakfast foods for breakfast. Sometimes, I grab leftover salad or a bowl of quinoa and beans. Other times, I make eggs for dinner or have protein mousse for lunch.
And yes, sometimes I go off plan. I indulge, I order in, and sometimes I eat more than I should. But guess what?
I’M NOT PERFECT. I WILL NEVER BE PERFECT.
And I’m okay with that.
The point is, it doesn’t matter what others think of my habits or decisions as long as they work for me. I’m the boss of me. I’ve accepted that I don’t need to be perfect in anyone’s eyes—not even my own. I just have to be happy with myself.
